Why Are Dietary Restrictions Necessary After Surgery?

What Should I Eat After Bariatric Surgery?

First and foremost, you’ll need to eat less. Your digestive system has been surgically altered and cannot support the same amount of food as before. Smaller portions keep your metabolism high but limit how many calories you consume each day.

As you recover, avoid bread, rice, pasta and raw foods. Don’t eat meats if they’re not easy to chew. For example, steak and pork chops should be ground before you eat them. Avoid large amounts of fruit juice, and don’t drink sodas at all.

• Don’t use straws at all. Drinking through a straw can introduce air to your digestive system before it’s had a chance to adjust to the new arrangement.
• Between month one and three of recovery, you should not consume less than 300 calories or greater than 600 calories per day. After three months, your total caloric intake should not be greater than 1,000 calories per day.
• Don’t drink alcohol at all. Your body will absorb alcohol much quicker than before surgery.
• Keep a detailed record of what you eat. That will help you track calories and protein intake.
• Drink extra water while you’re recovering. Between your small meals, drink water. Aim for two liters, or about eight cups, of water a day.

Will I Need Supplements?

Following weight loss surgery, you will probably need to supplement your diet. You may need to take calcium, vitamin B-12 and vitamin D supplements to ensure you’re getting adequate nutrition. However, your doctor can tell you for certain which vitamins to take.
